Matthew 20:1-16 Spark Bible: The Vineyard Workers

Talk About It!

Have fun asking question for all your family members!

During Lent, the 40-day church season preceding Easter, we focus on Jesus’ ministry: his teaching, his miracles, and his parables. Today we’re learning about the Parable of the Vineyard Workers. A vineyard is a place where grapes grow. Do you like grapes? What things can you think of that are made from grapes? It’s hard work to harvest grapes, so the farmer in Jesus’ story needed helpers. The helpers don’t all work for the same amount of time, but the farmer pays them the same amount of money. Is that fair?

Digging Deeper (great topics for Upper Elementary): Can you think of a time when something unfair happened at home? At school? In the world? We could talk all day about all the unfairness that surrounds us, but thankfully God is more loving and generous than fair. Let’s face it. We do and think a lot of things that are unkind, selfish, and wrong. This is called sin, and if everything was fair, our sin would need to be punished. Instead, our God is generous with love, grace, and mercy. We are forgiven, and we are called on to forgive. We are called to be generous, loving, and patient.

Family Activity

Pick activities to do together!

  • Activity: Choosing Fair Teams Put a piece of masking tape on the floor. Divide yourselves into “fair teams” for the following (silly) activities:
    Kitty petting contest
    Spelling bee
    Staring Contest
    Watermelon seed spitting contest
    Handstand contest
  • How did you decide what would be a fair team? Was it easy or hard to make the teams fair?

Activity 2: Grape Roll Bunch Cut fifteen strips of purple paper about ½-1” wide and 4-5” long. Roll the strip into a circle and fasten with tape or glue. Then make a “bunch” of grapes by fastening the circles in a 5-4-3-2-1 pattern. Hang your bunch of grapes somewhere you can see them to remind you of God’s generous gifts of love, grace, and mercy.

Pray Together

“Dear God, you are generous with your love, grace, and mercy. Help us to forgive others as you forgive us. Amen.

Bless Each Other

At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.

Give each other a hug and say “I love you first and last!
