Spark Story Bible – The Beatitudes
Matthew 5:1-12
Talk About It!
Have fun asking question for all your family members!
Talk About It: What are some things that make you happy? Potato chips, ice skating, and funny movies make me happy. What are the blessings in your life? Some of the blessings in my life are a warm home, clean water, and a family who loves me. And the greatest blessing is knowing that no matter what, I am loved by God.
Dig Deeper: Are being happy and being blessed the same? Why or why not? Which of the Beatitudes is the easiest to understand? Which is the hardest? Jesus wants us to think about our spiritual needs, not just our earthly, bodily needs. Jesus wants us to do what is right, to show kindness and forgiveness to others, to call out for peace and justice. When we do these things, we are blessed and we become blessings to others.
Family Activity
Pick activities to do together! Supplies are provided in our Monthly At-Home Kits you picked up at our drive thru events or ask to have delivered to your home.
Activity 1: Beatitude Bouquet Using craft sticks and glue/scissors/paper or stickers, create a beatitude bouquet like Leah made in the video. Young children will need help writing the Beatitudes on the stems. See Activity 2 or your Bible for what to write on the stems.
Activity 2: Alternate Beatitude Bouquet No craft sticks? Just make a flower (a center plus 8 petals) and write the keywords on the center and on each petal. Feel free to paraphrase based on your discussions with your child.
Center: Blessed are…
Petal 1: the poor in spirit
Petal 2: those who mourn
Petal 3: the meek
Petal 4: those hungry for righteousness
Petal 5: the merciful
Petal 6: the pure in heart
Petal 7: the peacemakers
Petal 8: the persecuted
Pray Together
“Dear Lord, we thank you for sending Jesus, the world’s coolest teacher. Jesus brought a message of peace and hope, of joy and love. Thank you for many blessings. Amen.”
Bless Each Other
At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.
Give each other a hug and say “you are a blessing!”
