Shine a Light: Light a candle and say “Jesus is the light of the world!”

Sing Together: Thank you, God, for giving us life! Thank you, God, for giving us life! Thank you, God, for giving us life! Right where we are. (Think of 3 more things you are grateful for and insert them in the song.)

Offering: What would you like to give as an offering to today?

Pray together: Give thanks for three things and/or recite the Lord’s Prayer together

Read the Bible Together

Read this week’s God’s Great Story in the children’s Bible for you child’s age.

Matthew 20:1-16 Spark Bible: The Vineyard Workers

Talk About It!

Have fun asking question for all your family members!

Do you like the color purple? What things can you think that are purple?

We are in a new season at church and purple just happens to be it’s color! It’s called Lent, the 40 days leading up to Holy Week and Easter. During this time we focus on Jesus and all the ways He shared God’s love with us and taught us how to love others.

In our story today, Jesus told a story that didn’t sound very fair. Why did everyone get the say pay no matter how much they worked? Jesus was trying to tell us about God’s love and forgiveness. It given to us all, no matter what. Now that sounds nice until you start comparing yourself to someone you think hasn’t been a generous or as kind as you, why should they get the same amount of God’s love. Jesus is teaching us that we should love the same way, give and forgive without holding a grudge. Well Jesus’ friend thought that didn’t sound quite right. He asked Jesus well how many times do I have to forgive some, like 7 times? And Jesus replied not just 7 but 7 X 70 times! That math I can’t even do without a calculator! He’s trying to teach us if God’s love never ends, so should ours.

So during this season of Lent, look for ways you can share love like God, without end!

Digging Deeper (great topics for Upper Elementary): In the story today, the last verse says “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” What do you think Jesus means? Has this ever happened to you at home, school, or playing a sport? Talk about how this deals with generosity and how you’ve seen God be generous with you and your family.

Family Activity

Pick activities to do together!

Activity 1: Make a Lent family challenge –  Think of a way you can challenge your family to share more of God’s love this season. Maybe it’s giving to the food bank, or using less plastics, or pick random acts of kindness. Then make a sign to put on your fridge to remind you of your challenge.

Activity 2: Calculator Fun – Grab a calculator and find out what 7 X 70 equals. Then make your own giant calculator by using 12 sheets of paper to write one number per page, 0 to 9, and then make a multiplication “X” on one and an equals sign “=” on the last. Set it up like a calculator on the floor and play like hop scotch the math equations: 7 X70 = (hop on the correct numbers for the answer). Make it more fun by rearranging the numbers or spreading them out.

Pray Together

Generous God, Help us to trust that what you promised us, you will give us. Help us to stop worrying about what everyone else has, and be thankful for what we have. Amen

Bless Each Other

At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.

Hold up 7 fingers and say “I love you 7 times 70!
