Read the Bible Together

Isaiah 9:6-7
Spark Story Bible – A Child Called Immanuel, pg 162

Talk About It!

Have you ever gotten good news about something that is going to happen? Maybe you’re going to take a trip, or have visitors, or get a new dishwasher (or toy or pet). A prophecy tells ahead of time what is going to happen in the future. Both Isaiah 9:6-7 and “A Child Called Immanuel” are prophecies about Jesus, told about 700 years before Jesus was born! Would you believe it if someone told you a child would be king? Would you believe it if that child king was God coming to be with us? That is what Immanuel means…God with us.

Digging deeper: What are you grateful for? I am grateful that God is with us. I am grateful that I can see God’s love at work in the world. I am grateful for Isaiah’s words of comfort, especially “and the government will be upon his (Jesus’) shoulders.” What does this mean? Does this mean Jesus will give the president and all our elected leaders a piggyback ride? Of course not! It means we can lean on Jesus. Jesus can shoulder our burdens, lend us strength, and show us a better way of doing things. Jesus heals, renews, feeds, rescues, and restores. Jesus spreads peace and justice, and he calls on us to do the same. We can start by recognizing our blessings and doing acts of gratitude.
