Read the Bible Together

John 11:1-44
Spark Story Bible – Lazarus pg 354

Talk About It!

Do you ever feel happy? Do you ever feel sad? How many different feelings can you think of?

Did you know God made feelings, all of them, even anger and sadness. All of them are part of who we are and believe it or not they make our lives whole. In our Bible Story today, even Jesus is so sad that He cried. It’s actually the shortest verse in the whole Bible, “Jesus wept.” So if Jesus was God’s son and supposed to be perfect, if even He gets sad and cries, it must mean it’s ok.
Jesus was sad because He heard His friend Lazarus had died. When He got to his house, He cried with His friends. Jesus’ friends were a little upset because the believed if Jesus had been there Lazarus may have not died. So to show everyone He was indeed God’s son, He yelled “Lazarus come out!” And miraculously Lazarus was raised back to life. Many people saw and heard about this and believed. That’s pretty amazing!

Now I don’t think the story is trying to tell us that when ever we’re sad Jesus will show up and magically make everything all better. But I do think it’s telling us that God’s love can find us in even the saddest, most frustrating, loneliest, scariest of time and bring us comfort and even a little joy again. That I’ve seen God do almost daily. Usually its a family member or friend, or even my pet  or favorite food, that shows us and calls me out to make me feel not so alone and that it’s ok to feel how I feel. That is pretty amazing as well!

Digging deeper: This story foreshadows something that happens later in the Gospel of John. Can you guess what it is? How is this story similar? How is it different?

Family Activity Choices

Pick activities to do together! Supplies are provided in our Monthly At-Home Kits you picked up at our drive thru events or ask to have delivered to your home.

Lazarus Come Out! Activity: Back in Jesus’ time, they wrapped people in cloth when they were buried. Grab some toilet paper and have fun reenacting this amazing story. Take turns wrapping each other in toilet paper, and shout, “Lazarus, come out!”

Emoji Feelings Bingo: PRINT these fun Bingo Sheets and have a family game of bingo and talk about each emotion when it’s called.

Pray Together

Dear God, thank you for always sending you love to give us comfort no matter what emotion we are feeling. We love you, God. Amen.

Bless Each Other

At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.

Give each other a hug, then say “I love you, no matter how you’re feeling!”
