Do you like telling stories? Who tells you stories? What is one of your favorite?
Today we learn that Jesus loved to tell stories to help people learn about God’s love. These types of stories are called parables, not an account of something that really happened, but way to help us see what God’s love is like. Today’s story is about 2 people building a house, one on a rock and another on sand. Sounds a little bit like the 3 Little Pigs, but Jesus wasn’t trying to give us good building advice. He was reminding us we have a firm foundation of knowing God loves us, we can trust Him through anything. What else do you think Jesus is trying to tell us in the story?
Digging Deeper (great topics for Upper Elementary): Matthew 7 is FULL of stories and imagery. Read through it together and talk about what you think Jesus is trying to tell us about God’s love.
Family Activity
Pick activities to do together! Supplies are provided in our Monthly At-Home Kits you picked up at our drive thru events or ask to have delivered to your home.
Activity 1 – House upon a ________ Science Experiment: Use a paper milk carton or anything you can image as a house. Try putting it on a variety of surfaces and then make your own storm by blowing on it and.or pouring water on it. Discuss why the house stood tall or fell down together. Talk about times you may feel like you’re getting blown over and how remembering God’s love can help you.
Activity 2 – Architecture Search – Look up types of house from around the world and talk about if they look like they have firm foundations. What kind of house do you imagine?
Pray Together
“Dear Jesus, Thank you for teaching us with stories. Help me to remember that I have a solid foundation in God’s love anytime I’m worried or sad. Love you God! Amen”
Bless Each Other
At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.
Give each other fist bumps and say “God’s love is as strong as a rock!”
