Read the Bible Together

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
and The Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32 or pg 319 of Spark Story Bible
Or watch the Holy Moly Video

Talk About It!

Talk About It: What are some things you like to do with trees & wood? If you were a tree, what kind would you like to be? Big and tall like a pine tree, long flowing branches like a willow, or maybe super fruity like an apple tree.

How are the Boy in the Giving Tree and the Son in the Prodigal Son story alike? How are the Tree and the Father alike? Which one reminds you the most of you? Which one reminds you the most of God? Both stories are about “generosity,” that means HUGE, overwhelming kindness and love, even if others don’t seem to think you deserve it. Both are beautiful pictures of what God’s love for us is like. We can never ask for too much, it will never run out, and He will always forgive us when we mess up. And that’s how God ask us to love each other. Can you think of someone who loves you that much? Can you think of someone you love that much? How can you as a family loves others like that?

Dig Deeper: Aside from the lovely parts of the story, do you “eye spy” anyone who could be angry or resentful of the generosity? Or maybe not so grumpy but just sad? Have you ever felt like the other brother in the story? Or how about lonely like the tree? How do we find ways to be loving and forgiving when that happens to us?

Pray Together

Loving God, thank you for our amazing generous love. Help me to love like you. Amen.“

Bless Each Other

At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.

Stand in tree pose and say “thank you for loving me!”
