Sharing and Discussion
Who’s your favorite hero? Do they look like a typical hero?
Some heroes may be small or seen as weak, but because they have big hearts they can do big things!
Samuel was surprised that God had chosen David to be the next King. Samuel assumed that God would pick the oldest and the biggest, but instead, he wanted the youngest and the smallest of Jesse’s family. God saw something inside David’s heart that would make him a good king. What good things do you think God sees in your heart? Did you ever think something negative about someone and then see them do something positive or kind?
Read the Bible Together
School Age Kids: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Littles: Spark Story Bible page 128 (not in the Frolic Preschool Bible this week)
Digging deeper:
How do we see others? How do they see us? Remember, we all have many different relationships: you might be a child, a grandchild, a friend, a cousin, a student, a neighbor, a teammate, and more! Does your grandparent think of you the same way as your teacher or your teammate? Make a list of some different people in your life. Write or tell something positive about each one.
Family Activities
Read or Watch a story about a Super Hero: After, talk about what made them a good hero. What did they use on the inside that was more important that what they looked like on the outside.
Creating from the inside out: Tape a heart shape onto a piece of paper. Decorate all around the heart with crayons, markers, paint, tape, etc. When everything around the heart is colorful, remove the heart to show the heart-shaped space in the middle of the paper. In that middle heart space, write “The Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
The math of anointing: Samuel anointed David with a special oil. There is a recipe for sacred anointing oil in Exodus, chapter 30, verses 22-25.Since we do not measure items by shekel or hin, like they did in the Bible, figure out and rewrite the recipe in pounds and gallons. (Hint- my bible said 500 shekels = 12.5 pounds and a hin= 1 gallon
Recipe for sacred anointing oil
500 shekels of liquid myrrh
250 shekels of fragrant cinnamon
250 shekels of fragrant calamus
500 shekels of cassia
1 hin of olive oil
