Spark Story Bible Naomi and Ruth or Ruth 1:1-17

Talk About It!

Have fun asking question for all your family members!

Talk About It: Have you ever heard someone say, “1,2, skip a few, 99, 100”? For the past few weeks we have done our stories in order from the first and second books of the bible -Genesis and Exodus. Today we are going to skip ahead to book #8, the book called Ruth. At the beginning of the story, a woman named Naomi and her husband leave their home in Bethlehem because there is not enough food and they move to a place called Moab. That would be like moving to a different country. Naomi’s sons grow up in Moab and marry women from there. Sadly, Naomi’s husband and sons die. Naomi knows there is more food in Bethlehem now, so she decides to go back home. Her daughter-in-laws say they will go with her, but she tells them to go back to their own parents and stay in their own country. One girl stays, but the other one, Ruth wants to stay with Naomi. She says, “I will go where you go. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.” After Ruth moves to Bethlehem, she marries Boaz and they end up being the great-grandparents of King David! Do you know who else is from Bethlehem and is related to King David?…JESUS!

Dig Deeper: Ruth was a good friend to Naomi. Think about what makes a good friend. Taking turns? Cheering for each other? Staying with you when you have a problem? Laughing together? Do you have good friends? Do you act like a good friend to others?

Family Activity Choices

Pick activities to do together with supplies you have around your house!

Activity 1: Family Tree – In the bible, Abraham was related to Isaac and Jacob and Judah, and the family line kept going until Boaz and Obed and Jesse and David, and then eventually to Joseph and Jesus. Ask your parents to help you draw your family tree and see how many people you can find!

Activity 2: Bread for the World Write letters to Congress to promote legislation that will help alleviate hunger in our country and around the world. Kids can fill in the blanks, but they may need help with spelling and with filling in the correct information about the story of Ruth. Bread for the World 2023 letter

Pray Together

“Dear God, thank you for Ruth and Naomi showing us how to be loyal friends and family. Bless our efforts to be a good friend and neighbor to others. Amen”

Bless Each Other

At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.

Give each other a hug and say, “Where you go, I’ll go!”
