Meals on Wheels: Volunteers Needed

Meals on Wheels is part of Nativity’s Hunger Community Outreach. Our Hunger Outreach recognizes and responds to the reality that many people are unable to acquire sufficient food to meet basic nutritional needs. To volunteer or ask questions about volunteering for Meals on Wheels, contact Laura Oksnevad at loksnevad@gmail.com or (612) 788-9527.

What do drivers do?
Drivers deliver lunch to clients on one of our routes, approximately 40 minutes long. They deliver the hot lunches ready at our office at 11:15 a.m. to 8 to 10 clients in our service area—zip codes 55413, 55414, and 55418. Delivery drivers hand the meal to the client in person and assist them if necessary. As a driver you will get to know the clients on your route and tell us if you notice anything wrong or different with them. We keep an eye out for our clients.

How often do I deliver meals?
Drivers from Nativity Lutheran Church drive 14 times a year on the 1st or 2nd Fridays of the month.

What else should I know about delivering?
You must be able to lift and carry meal carriers, and walk stairs.
You must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license, an automobile in good working order, and auto insurance.
You must have a caring attitude and genuine interest in the elderly.
