Opera Singer and Former Nativity Music School Alum Returns to Sing Where it all Began
When Alexander Adams-Leytes was three years old, he began attending classes in Nativity’s children’s music program, run at the time by Mrs. Glenie Merwin. He continued in these classes four mornings a week for several years. It was here that he sang his first ever solo, in a Christmas program when he was six years old. (It was called “Christmas Bells” in case anyone is curious!)
Over thirty years later, he is now a professional opera singer who has performed all over the United States, in sixteen different states, as well as in Europe. He primarily performs comic buffo roles in operas written by Mozart, Rossini, and Donizetti, as well as some works by composers including Puccini, Strauss, and Gilbert/Sullivan. He has also performed several art song recitals. On Thursday, September 24, he returns to the place where his musical training all started, to sing a concert of opera and art song highlights, accompanied by collaborative pianist Kerri LeJeune. In doing so, he wishes to raise money to enable future students at Nativity to have similar experiences as he had to get him started with positive introductions to music education, and wants to recognize and thank Mrs. Merwin, whom he has invited to be the guest of honor, for the role she played in all of it.
