SUMMARY:Popular Topics (PopTops)
DESCRIPTION:HARRIET BEECHER STOWE: A SPIRITUAL LIFE\nLong before women could vote\, they found ways to change history. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s great anti-slavery novel\, UNCLE TOM’S CABIN\, came out in 1852 as the nation was heading toward Civil War. Stowe’s book convinced thousands of readers that slavery was wrong. Nancy Koester will tell Stowe’s story based on her book Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Spiritual Life\, winner of the Minnesota Book Award in 2015. A few copies of the book will be available for purchase.\nBrief bio for Nancy Koester\nDr. Nancy Koester also wrote Fortress\, Introduction to the History of Christianity in America. She holds a Ph.D. in church history from Luther Seminary where she taught for a dozen years. She has also taught at Augsburg College and the University of Northwestern. She is a retired ordained Lutheran pastor. Her current project is a biography of Sojourner Truth.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Morning Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday\, 6:30-7:30 am.  Breakfast is not served. Coffee is available.  But the conversation is engaging.  A study of contemporary books on topics that challenge and inform our life as Christians.\nBeginning Tuesday\, December 3 we will begin a series of conversations stimulated by the very popular book UNIVERSAL CHRIST\, by Richard Rohr. Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant\, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them\,” he writes\, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice.\nThe conversations are open to all who yearn for a stimulating start to their day. Books can be purchased upon request at Nativity.\nFor more info\, contact Jerry Hoffman\, jerjo.hoffman@gmail.com or 773-443-3353.\n[hr]\nAnother Name for Every Thing with Richard Rohr is a twelve part conversation series on the themes of his new book\, The Universal Christ: How a Forgotten Reality Can Change Everything We See\, Hope For\, and Believe. Richard is joined by two students of the Christian contemplative path\, Brie Stoner and Paul Swanson\, who seek to integrate the wisdom of The Universal Christ amidst diapers\, disruptions\, and the shifting state of our world.\nYou can listen and subscribe to Another Name for Every Thing with Richard Rohr through iTunes\, Google Podcast\, Stitcher\, etc.. You can click on the image/links below to go directly to those Podcast offerings.\nYou can also listen to these directly on the cac.org website: https://cac.org/podcast/another-name-for-every-thing/

SUMMARY:Social Justice Book Club
DESCRIPTION:KING LEOPOLD’S GHOST – A STORY OF GREED\, TERROR\, AND HEROISM IN COLONIAL AFRICA\, by Adam Hochschild\nIn the 1880s\, as the European powers were carving up Africa\, King Leopold II of Belgium seized for himself the vast and mostly unexplored territory surrounding the Congo River. Carrying out a genocidal plundering of the Congo\, he looted its rubber\, brutalized its people\, and ultimately slashed its population by ten million—all the while shrewdly cultivating his reputation as a great humanitarian. Heroic efforts to expose these crimes eventually led to the first great human rights movement of the twentieth century\, in which everyone from Mark Twain to the Archbishop of Canterbury participated. King Leopold’s Ghost is the haunting account of a megalomaniac of monstrous proportions\, a man as cunning\, charming\, and cruel as any of the great Shakespearean villains. It is also the deeply moving portrait of those who fought Leopold: a brave handful of missionaries\, travelers\, and young idealists who went to Africa for work or adventure and unexpectedly found themselves witnesses to a holocaust. Adam Hochschild brings this largely untold story alive with the wit and skill of a Barbara Tuchman. Like her\, he knows that history often provides a far richer cast of characters than any novelist could invent. Chief among them is Edmund Morel\, a young British shipping agent who went on to lead the international crusade against Leopold. Another hero of this tale\, the Irish patriot Roger Casement\, ended his life on a London gallows. Two courageous black Americans\, George Washington Williams and William Sheppard\, risked much to bring evidence of the Congo atrocities to the outside world. Sailing into the middle of the story was a young Congo River steamboat officer named Joseph Conrad. And looming above them all\, the duplicitous billionaire King Leopold II. With great power and compassion\, King Leopold’s Ghost will brand the tragedy of the Congo—too long forgotten—onto the conscience of the West.

SUMMARY:Sabbath Sermon Series
DESCRIPTION:Week 1 (Aug. 17 & 18) – Sabbath\, A Mindset?\nAs people change\, as culture and society transform\, do we need to consider a new or different way of approaching the Sabbath? Overworked and under rested\, how do we respond? Do we follow God’s commandment in Deuteronomy to keep the Sabbath holy and be still for a day? Or do we accept Jesus’ invitation in Matthew to rest? Or do we respond with a modern perspective for a modern time and a modern people that sincerely need rest and rejuvenation? How do we honor the past and live into the now? Come and see and listen to a personal perspective on keeping the Sabbath in the 21st century.\n[hr] \nWeek 2 (Aug. 24 & 25) – Rest; the Rhythm of Life?\nThe Bible tells us that God creates\, and God rests\, setting the stage for a natural rhythm to life. We see it in the changing of seasons\, we see it when the Sun moves across the sky\, and we see it when a loved one transitions from this material life to the one eternal. All things rest. But from rest\, comes new life. From rest comes renewal.\nBut as a 21st century Christian\, I often don’t rest\, and I find I am rarely renewed. And why not? Do I get in my own way? If so\, how do I let my guard down long enough to find myself flowing freely and restfully within the natural rhythm of things? What is it like to rest in the shadow of creation? And what new life can it afford?\n[hr]\nKyle Soderberg\, Club 56 (Grades 5 & 6 Faith Formation) and Coordinator of Community Partnerships will be bringing his thoughts and personal perspective to this topic on August 17th & 18th\, as well as\, August 24th & 25th.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Morning Conversations: Speaking Christian\, by Marcus Borg
DESCRIPTION:Borg\, an internationally renowned Biblical scholar argues that Christianity’s important words\, and the sacred texts and stories in which those words are embedded\, have been narrowed by a modern framework for the faith. \nBorg delivers a language for twenty-first-century Christians that grounds the faith in its deep and rich original roots and allows it once again to transform our lives.  He states: “For many\, Christianity has become an unfamiliar language. . . Many people either do not know the words at all or\, if they have heard the words\, have no idea what they mean.  . .The faith is often misunderstood and distorted.” \nThese conversations take place at Nativity on Tuesday mornings from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM.  The conversations on this book will  begin on February 12 at 6:30 AM and lasts for an hour each week and will continue into the spring.  Some  participants are attend regularly\, others come when they can.  You are invited to come and see if this is for you. \nThe  book can be purchased at the Nativity Welcome desk.   \nFor more information contact Jerry Hoffman\, Pastor Emeritus\, jerjo.hoffman@gmail.com or call 763-443-3353
