In preparation for their youth trip this summer to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Nativity students volunteered at the First Nations Kitchen on Sunday, April 23. First Nations Kitchen is the state’s only program serving free meals that are based on traditional Indigenous diet. This program is a ministry of All Saints Episcopal Indian Mission in the Powderhorn neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Nativity students and their families prepped, cleaned and served the meal. All Saints has been serving this healthy, organic, traditional, indigenous meal in a welcoming environment every Sunday since 2008. Our group from Nativity also had the opportunity to meet and socialize with many people from the Powderhorn neighborhood and the All Saints community. This event was planned by Nativity Church staff member Kelly Sherman-Conroy as a way to introduce students to Native culture. Kelly is coordinating this cultural immersion experience and is herself a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe located in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
